If you wish to have a presence on the web, your domain name is one
of the most important decisions you will need to make. Your web
site can develop an impression simply by the domain name you have
registered.
Dot what?
There are many different extensions available right now. If you
are a business, we recommend a .com suffix. It is the first extension
that most people try when searching for a site. Also, since it is
one of the oldest extensions, .com shows that your business has
been around for a while and has a well established presence on the
web. However if you wish advertise your location as as a UK based
company, a .co.uk suffix is a perfectly reasonable alternative.
Search what?
When trying to choose a domain name be sure to put thought into
it. Try to use phrases that are very descriptive of your services
or products. Also placing a (-) dash between key words in your domain
name can provide you with an advantage in search engines. Try not
to have your domain name containing more than 3 words. Having a
well thought out domain name that uses some keywords that your customers
would use in a search for your site can really help your rankings!
Beware of trademarked names.
There are two really good reasons for this. First, it is rather
underhanded. Companies spend a lot of time and money creating their
brand, and you wouldn't like it if someone did this to you.
The second reason to avoid trademarked names is that companies are
no longer opening their chequebooks to get their names back. They
are calling their lawyers.
Move quickly
Domain names are being snatched up fast. You must register soon
unless you want to get stuck with "the-domain-name-that-no-one-will-remember.com".
Contact us and we'll help you register the name you want before
you lose the opportunity.
Sometimes, it isn't a bad idea to register several similar domain
names. If you have "yourname.com", register "yourname.co.uk"
so no one else takes it. You can register your full company and
a shorter, easier to remember version. Some people even register
common misspellings of their company’s name. we are happy
to advise you on the registration of multiple domains.
Special Character types
Just a reminder. Domain names can only use letters, numbers, and
hyphens ("-"). Spaces and other symbols are not allowed.
Domain names are not case sensitive. New extensions are popping
up every day so be sure to research this often to review other possibilities.
Seek opinions
When you have settled on several available name choices, see what
your friends and clients have to say. A name that may make perfect
sense to you may be too hard for other people to remember.
