The first Leverburgh village Hall was built in the early 1960's as a temporary measure. Since then it has had very little sturctural improvements. It provided a facility which met the needs of the community at the time, but it is a basic brick structure interior wall insulation and is wooden floored. The building consisted of an entrance, toilets, main hall and a kitchen with small adjoining storage area. A committee room/pool room was added during the 1980's. Theses areas were considered very basic and could not meet the requirements of the community today. New Hall
The new hall was officially opened on September 11th 2002 by The Earl and Countess of Wessex.
It is hoped that many of the potential 30 or so organisations in South Harris, and also a greater number covering the rest of harris, will make use of the new facilities. Committee meetings, seminars, business conferences, the arts, entertainment, certain sports and people with special needs such as the elderly and disabled are among the uses the hall wishes to encourage. Also use as a fundraising venue, a recreational venue and for social functions and various educational uses. Leverburgh is agruably the most central point of the Western Isles and good hall facilities could be used by organisations not only from Harris, but also from thw whole of the Western Isles region. This is especially true since the new Sound Of Harris ferry came into use on the 25th August 1997. The new hall cost over £420,000 and includes a large hall with a portable stage and retractable seating, a common room and a games room, meeting room, kitchen, store, toilet and shower facilities. village hall website |
